Strawberry millefeuille!

Hey everyone, firstly i’ve got a coupon code for all of you. Use merryxmas to get 40% off everything at my Etsy store and for international customers make sure to order soon to make it in time for Christmas. It can take up to 3 weeks to the US when it gets to Christmas season so order soon :) .

I start my new uni course tomorrow and I am a little nervous. I’ve been at uni for three years now and I still get really nervous for a completely new course haha… sigh, I hope everything works out :) . Today I have a mini millefeuille pastry tutorial for all of you. I decided to just teach the pastry so you can fill it up with whatever you want.

I should warn you guys that the pictures are of a shockingly terrible quality though. I have no idea why but my camera just wasn’t focusing and it was bizarre. I tried my best and touched them up a bit, but they’re still pretty bad. Also, even though millefeuille pastry is not technically hard to make steps-wise, to get the flaky texture you must use a paper clay. Well that’s not technically true actually, i’ve seen gorgeous millefeuille made by dollhouse miniaturists by polymer clay but i’ve tried many times and failed. You’re welcome to try though :) .

Super Roll Cake Man brings in the customers... David says it's almost like prostitution XD.

Hey everyone, firstly thank you so, so much for your messages of support. I’m really touched by how generous many of you were with your support and I just wanted to thank you all from the bottom of my heart. Knowing that my little website actually helps people and brightens people’s days means that i’ve accomplished a goal in my life :) .

So I wanted to give a bit of a thank you gift, and so i’ve drafted up a free pattern for a mini version of my Super Rollcake Man who seems to be popular. You can now sew up your very own little SRC-man to look after you with super sweetness! This is actually my very first time drafting a pattern, usually when I draft I draft directly onto the fabric, so if there are any issues with the paper pattern please let me know and i’ll fix it up accordingly.

Directions and pattern are after the jump:

Banana slices, not painted yet.

Hey everyone, recently I noticed that when I post a new post my page view stats go way up so I can only assume I have quite a few regular readers… come on, say hi! I’d love to get to know you, leave a comment or add me on twitter, i’d love to talk to you and get to know you if you don’t mind :) .  I promise I don’t bite!

I’m also feeling much better, i’ve got two bakery shelves done for my market stall, and i’ve got some makeshift business cards done. I’d say i’m about 50% there now, i’ve just got to make a bit more items, then deal with all the annoying financial business stuff with opening a market stall. Plus I have to wait for a large shipment of jewellery findings to arrive from overseas anyway, so I can’t do anything right now :( .

Anyway i’ve finally got that banana slice tutorial up, once again this was made by air dry clay for me, but don’t worry polymer clay users, this one’s easy for you guys!

Edit: this is not the ‘normal’ way of doing strawberry slices. Painting air dry clay is common in Japanese deco books and sites, but with polymer clay this is not how you’re really supposed to do it. With polymer clay you are supposed to make a cane and slice strawberries off it. Here is a thread with many links on different ways to do the cane. Personally, I have failed at every attempt to make one and instead of wasting more clay, I decided to find an alternative way.

Guys, I was just reading one of my favourite sweets deco blogs and found that they had written a strawberry slice tutorial today pretty much identical to the way I do it. It’s here.

The general premise is that you make a long sausage out of your clay and then shape it into a long triangle shape. Then paint the outside of the cane with red acrylic paint. After that, slice the cane into small slices, and then using really diluted red acrylic paint, paint the outer edges of the slice red like a strawberry.

Some notes about doing strawberry slices this way:

  • This uses air dry clay, which is what I use also to make my strawberry slices. After years of failing horribly at making polymer strawberry canes, I gave up. The air dry clay I use for this is a Japanese brand called ‘Grace’ which dries translucent. It seems that she is using Modena clay, which I personally haven’t tried yet.
  • She, being an incredibly patient person, actually bothers to make the white ‘veins’ inside the slices. I’ve read over and over again as to how she did it, and she just says that she used a ‘fine point brush to draw lines from the outside to the inside’, but I don’t know whether with paint, or water, or while the paint is still drying? I’m sorry, but I personally don’t do it so I have no idea how you could do it.
  • I don’t bother to poke seeds on the outside either.
  • If you want to do this with polymer clay you’d have to work very fast. Since you can’t bake acrylic paint you’d have to bake a long sausage of translucent clay first, then quickly while it’s still somewhat soft out of the over paint the outside red and slice while still sort of soft.

Anyway I hope this helped, any questions please ask me :) . I’m sorry I didn’t make a proper tutorial for this, the reason is because I really hate making them, and I also wanted to plug a favourite website of mine. I’m sorry.

A finished bow!

Finally granting someone’s wish for a bow tute :) . I love bows, but I hate making them! They’re really fiddly and hard to get right, but they look really good and they’re beautiful on items. There are lots of different ways to make bows, in fact I used to make them differently and you might see that they look a bit different on my older items. I wasn’t very happy with my old bows, so I modified the way I make them, but in doing so i’ve made it even harder for myself!

Anyway, my with my rant about bow-making over, let’s move on to the tutorial:
